UnitedHealthcare: Why We Walk

By supporting the American Heart Association, we hope to increase awareness about the benefits of walking, encourage individuals to make important lifestyle changes and raise valuable dollars for research and education. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and costs the nation nearly $305 billion annually.  More lives are lost to cardiovascular diseases than the next five leading causes of death combined.

You can help prevent it!

We believe that participating in Heart Walks across the country is the first STEP.  Click here to learn more about the forty-eight heart walks we participated in last year from our Heart Walk Co-Chairs, Tom McEnery and Austin Pittman. Over 300 teams rallied 3,380 registered walkers to raise more than $307,000 for the cause. Because of you, UnitedHealthcare was ranked #4 nationally by the AHA among all corporate teams in 2010. Your support in the fight against heart disease has set the bar high this year.

But it doesn’t stop there! UnitedHealthcare has also made a three-year, $1.95 million pledge to support the American Heart Association's Walking Paths program to help create a culture of health in communities where we live and work. Did you know - walking vigorously for as little as 30 minutes a day can improve circulation, lower cholesterol and blood pressure and promote weight loss when combined with reduced calorie intake! A walking paths resource website is available at www.startwalkingnow.org, and our walking paths smart phone applications are available for both the Android and iPhone operating systems.

As we work to fulfill our corporate mission of "helping people live healthier lives," reducing chronic diseases through prevention and care is a top priority. The American Heart Association shares our mission and brings passion to the cause.

Together, we can make a difference.
